Questions people ask

How many pixels is a 5 by 7 card at 300 ppi?

1500 by 2100 pixels at the trim size. With 0.125 in of bleed on every side the page becomes 5.25 by 7.25 in, which is 1575 by 2175 pixels.

What is the difference between trim, bleed and the safe zone?

Trim is the finished size after cutting. Bleed is extra background that runs past the trim so the cut never leaves a white sliver. The safe zone is an inner margin where text and faces stay clear of the cut.

Does a banner need bleed?

It depends on the print shop and on how the banner is finished, for example with hems or grommets. Ask your shop for their bleed and safe margin before you set up the file.

What resolution should a banner be?

Cards are usually printed from 300 ppi files. Large banners are viewed from further away, so 150 ppi, and sometimes 100 ppi, is common. Your print shop can confirm what they prefer.

Why does a large banner give such big pixel numbers?

Pixels are inches times ppi, so a 6 ft side at 150 ppi is 72 times 150, or 10800 pixels. Very large pixel sizes may be refused or slow in Canva. A common fix is to design at half size and have the printer scale up 200 percent.
